Philippians and Colossians

Why is Philippians relevant?

Several of the deep theological truths are found in Philippians.  Philippians 1:6 says, “He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”  So we are works in progress.

Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.”  In Philippians 2:5-11, we have the portrait of Jesus as a humble servant as the core of Paul’s teaching.  The only way for a community of believers to live in harmony with one another comes through mutual humility modeled after our Savior.  We have much to be thankful for, but sometimes the pressures of life squeeze the joy from us.  The Philippians modeled true joy that comes only through the humble faith in the saving work of Jesus, joining ourselves in harmony with his followers and serving others in the name of Christ.

Why is Colossians important?

The church at Colossae was under attack from false teachers who, like some in the world today, believed that Jesus was not God.  Jesus is our Creator and Redeemer.  When Christ took on human flesh, he became the visible image of the invisible God, containing within himself the fullness of Deity.  Paul states that believers have died with Christ, so we need to die to our sins.  We have been raised with Christ; therefore, we must live in Him and live a life of submission to Jesus and be motivated to serve in Christian love.
