Bibles of Yesterday

Going through boxes and bookcases, you often find things from long ago, things long forgotten, such as I did recently when I found Mom Cain’s very old Bible – what a jewel!  Like my own mother’s Bible, it is tattered and well worn with a lot of handwritten notes on almost every page.  Reading the notes, you can almost see how she lived her life and her thoughts on the life that she lived.

Love of her family is handwritten in the “Family Pages”.  Each entry shows the love she had for her family, along with the history of their lives and genealogy that was updated with loving notes.

This book is this family’s life, not only for the Biblical words, but for the way they lived their Christian lives and the love they shared as a family.  Most of us today do not use our Bibles as they did back in those days.  Oh yes, as Christians, we all have some kind of relationship with the Bible, but I often think of how different my Bible is from Mom Cain’s or my own mother’s.  At this point, I cannot help but remember when one of our pastors had a sermon on that old song… “Dust Off the Bible.”

In God’s love,

Ernie Cain
