Eternal Flame

Not too long ago, on a Sunday Morning while visiting with one of the Elders, I was asked if I knew where the secret place was.  Thinking I knew every little nook and cranny in the church, and after much thought, I came up with the answer…  The “Secret Place” is not a place in the church, but a pamphlet available in the Library, and Lee always purchased one as they became available.  So, yes, I did know the answer.  I think that was kind of a trick question.

However, that led me to another thought… We do have several little “nooks and crannies” around the church, and I sometimes think we may take them for granted or just look right at them and never really see them.

Every Sunday, I see the “Eternal Flame”, and I wonder how many of us know where it is or what it is and how it came about?  Looking just north of the piano and over the door, you will see it – a set of three lights framed in leaves and vines arched over the doorframe.  Originally, it was made with oil lit lamps in hopes the flames would burn for many months.  Not working as they should, the “flames” were later changed to electricity.  This work of art was designed, made and installed in 1997 by our song leader, Dale Belcher, lovingly dedicated in memory of a few of our long-ago members, one of which was Dale’s grandmother, Ola Belcher.  The plaque with this information is located on a shelf in the Church Library.

Precious Memories.
