Sunday Dinner At Home

Growing up, Sunday dinner was always special.  We raised chickens, so we usually had chicken and it would depend upon who was coming to dinner how the chicken was fixed.  Chicken and noodles for just family, chicken fried in the large cast iron chicken fryer if the preacher and his wife were coming – lots of buttery mashed potatoes with creamy chicken gravy and fresh vegetables right out of Dad’s garden, homemade bread and freshly-churned butter.

I always thought the preacher and his wife ate often at our house as my mother was a great cook, and due to our large family, she cooked a lot of food.  They were not the only ones who loved to come to our house; many family members visiting from California and other places made our house their first stop, and Mother always fed them.

We always knew early on Sunday morning, when Dad opened up the big round oak table with the claw feet to put the extra leaves in, that we were going to have company.  We all sat at the table; no one took a tray and moved to another room.  It was a magical time – a time I miss today.

My parents have been gone many years now, but with Mother’s Day, Memorial Day and Father’s Day coming up, I cannot help but think of the love that was shared around that big oak table.

Memories of yesteryear…
