The Advent Wreath

Each week during the season of Advent we ask someone from our church family to come forward and light the candles that surround the Advent Wreath.  Each candle surrounding the wreath symbolically represents some eternal aspect of God’s blessings.

There are 4 candles surrounding the Advent Wreath; 3 are purple, one is pink.  A 5th candle, a white candle, is placed in the center of the wreath, and this candle, of course, represents Christ.

The 4 candles surrounding the Advent Wreath represent the time in which we must wait in anticipation and celebration of the miraculous birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.  The first candle represents hope and signifies the hope one has in Jesus eventually coming into our lives.

Last week, we lit the second candle, and it represents peace and patience.  This week, we will light the third candle.

This pink candle represents the love and joy God has for each one of us.  This candle reminds us of the joy Mary felt when the angel Gabriel told her that a special child would be born to her, a child who would save and deliver all the people unto salvation.

God wants us all to have joy.  The angel who announced to the shepherds that Jesus had been born told them, “Do not be afraid.  I am bringing you good news of great joy for all people, for to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord.”

We light this candle to remember that Christ brings the promise of a new life, a life in which the blind will receive their sight, the lame will walk, and the prisoners will be set free.  We light this candle to remember that God is the one who can bring us true and everlasting joy.

Rejoice, celebrate, and be thankful for the joy of love that God gives to you.
